You may have seen in our social media, us referring to persons whom are attracted to minors as: “predators”, “pedophiles” or other derogatory terms. If this has been upsetting to you, we’re sorry. In general, using terms like these are not helpful, they stigmatize and create ideal circumstances which can lead to some people suppressing the need to get help. Most importantly, terms like these can also dehumanize. We are committed to improving the way we communicate about people dealing with this issue. Paedophilia is a mental disorder recognized by the American Psychiatric Association and we are ready to acknowledge this to further our mission to help protect children and vulnerable people online. Please, don’t get this wrong or misconstrue our position: Our stance is strong against those who have offended against minors. We also want to consider that there are genuine non-offending MAPs who need support. We all have to do our part to make sure that children are safe online. This includes treating those with mental disorders with dignity. If a person deals with this issue, they may find it harder to get help if they are stigmatized. We encourage you to think rationally about this and to attempt a change in language around this issue with us. If you’d like to have a civil discussion about this, please comment or send us an email from our website.
